  1. Greetings,
Nice post. Do not have anything so elaborate as I am on my laptop ready to return home (USA) but would surely agree with the comments. I have been to the west Algarve (Lagos and Portimao, and while nice in the off season, are unbearably crowded in the summer. Also the beaches and night life attract the somewhat crazier and unfortunately sometimes rude younger crowd, which I detest. Tavira is crowded in the summer but not as much, and is much more popular with the older and family oriented visitor. I can also highly recommend looking into the nearby villages of Conciacao and Cabanas, which are much smaller and very laid back, with very good restaurants and a mellower night life. Tavira is easily accessible by train from either to one. 1.40 Euros to Tavira, but if you are over 65, ask for the senior discount (half price).
After this stay I have decided to retire to Tavira this winter. Friendly people, great weather, cheap good wine and a new excellent shopping mall, and great prices to boot.
