How I made a friend on my first solo trip to Seoul

I first wrote this article for a site called Maptia in a segment called Places are like People where I was inspired by my first solo trip to Seoul. I’ve got more tips for solo travellers here, but read on and I’ll tell you about one of my minor accomplishments in life – making a friend on my first solo trip.

We met during the English tour of the Changdeokgung Secret Garden – Somehow we got to talking while wandering around the garden and we ended up deciding to hang out and grab some lunch after the tour. We found ourselves walking down to nearby Insadong and ended up at a random restaurant for lunch. After that we decided to do a little shopping around Ssamziegil and even wandered down to the Cheongyecheon where we soaked our tired feet in cool water and watched them film a commercial on the opposite bank.

We took a touristy shot at the head of the Cheongyecheon (and paid money for it! ack!) before we headed over to Gwanghwamun Square

Before we parted ways – me to wander around some more (I ended up heading to Dongdaemun later that night) and T went off to reunite with her husband. While we didn’t manage to meet up again later in the trip, I’m glad we still keep in touch today – viva la Facebook =)
