I was reminded about this while browsing Hejorama… It’s not exactly a place you can visit, but if you’ve been watching the HBO series A Game of Thrones (based on George R R Martin’s epic series A Song of Ice and Fire, then you would have seen their spectacular map opening credits below:
Very steampunkish and nothing quite like anything we’ve seen on TV before, it’s super cool, and the best thing is that it changes depending on the characters and storylines featured in that episode, so you’ll see new places being introduced every so often.
Imagine if our world map was rendered like that! History and Geography would definitely be so much more intriguing! Apparently it takes influence from Da Vinci and blacksmiths hence the whole cogs and metallic handmade feel to it…
And if you are watching the series, Season 1 was filmed in Northern Ireland and Malta, while Season 2 includes footage from the walled city of Croatia’s Dubrovnik (where I plan to visit in the near future!) as well as the icy landscapes of Iceland. Perhaps there will be some tourism sprouting out of this, like what Lord of the Rings did for New Zealand?
A Game of Thrones is currently being broadcast every Sunday evening.
