A friend directed me to this documentary called An Idiot Abroad. Created by Ricky Gervais (of Oscars and “Are you havin’ a laugh?” fame and Stephen Merchant, they send their friend Karl Pilkington off on a journey around the world and some cameras to follow him around. I’ll let the bio do the talking:
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are outraged that Karl has written off the Seven Wonders claiming they’re all “a bit s**t” having never seen any of them with his own eyes. They’ve thrown down the gauntlet to send him around the globe to force him out of his comfort zone. Stephen wants the experience to broaden Karl’s mind and change his outlook on the world. Ricky wants Karl to hate every minute of it for his own amusement.
The funniest thing would be this guy’s very serious demeanor and completely dead-pan humour in the face of the unknown. I suppose things also sound funnier with a British accent, but this guy who’s never travelled out of England before this gets a serious eye opener on different cultures and people around the world.
Also, I secretly suspect that Ricky Gervais did this whole series purely for his own amusement. Karl definitely has his moments, but he really cracks Ricky up~ If it makes the funny guy laugh, it’s probably really funny yah?
Some people are offended by Karl’s remarks and ignorance, but hey, not everyone is the worldly open traveller – there are definitely moments where you’re gonna step back and say ‘what in holy hell…?’, just that guy is perpetually in that state. Well it’s definitely something different from watching the usual travel hosts Ooooh and Aaaah over every thing. Karl’s also a radio personality and a regular guest to the Ricky Gervais Show, so he’s definitely not completely clueless about being on camera looking like, well.. an idiot!

Look out for An Idiot Abroad 2, where Karl goes to complete a bucket list…
